Topolánek's Government swept away by the opposition

The opposition successfully gained enough votes in the Chamber of Deputies today to secure a vote of no confidence against the government. The ČSSD have succeeded at their fifth attempt to depose the government. It’s the first time in the recent history of the Czech Republic that a vote of no confidence has been upheld.

The government could be expected to hand in it’s resignation by Thursday at the earliest as the Prime Minister is abroad in Strasbourg on Wednesday. The resignation should be handed to the President as soon as possible after the no-confidence vote.

‘I’ll put the resignation into the hands of the President as required by the constitution’, assured the Prime Minister.
